HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-3 was a key variant of one of Germany’s most formidable fighters of World War II. Introduced in early 1942, the A-3 version featured improved armament, armor protection, and range over its predecessors, making it highly effective in both air superiority and ground attack roles. Powered by the robust BMW 801D-2 radial engine, the Fw 190A-3 combined speed, firepower, and maneuverability, allowing it to challenge Allied aircraft on equal or superior terms across multiple theaters.
“Black 13” of 8./JG 2 “Richthofen” was one of many Fw 190A-3s stationed in occupied France in 1943. Jagdgeschwader 2 was named in honor of the famous World War I ace Manfred von Richthofen, the “Red Baron.” Operating along the Western Front, JG 2 was tasked with intercepting RAF bombers and escort fighters during the escalating Allied air campaign. “Black 13” participated in daily combat missions over the English Channel and northern France, often clashing with Spitfires, Typhoons, and B-17s during the RAF’s and USAAF’s increasing raids on German targets in occupied territory.
Throughout 1943, the Luftwaffe faced growing pressure as Allied bombing intensified. Fw 190 pilots of JG 2 adapted by flying more aggressive interception tactics and by modifying aircraft loadouts for high-altitude defense. Despite facing overwhelming odds and increasing numbers of long-range Allied fighters, the Fw 190A-3 maintained a fearsome reputation. Aircraft like “Black 13” represented the peak of Luftwaffe fighter capability during a period of transition, as the Allies gained both momentum and numerical superiority in the air war over Europe.
This 1:72 scale model with authentic unit markings, finely detailed panel lines, and a historically accurate camouflage scheme, it’s a standout addition to any World War II aviation collection—perfect for collectors and history buffs who appreciate the legacy of Germany’s premier wartime fighter.
