- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker has been one of the most important aerial refueling aircraft in United States Air Force history. Entering service in 1957, it was developed to support the growing fleet of long-range jet-powered bombers and fighters of the Cold War era. Its ability to refuel aircraft in flight dramatically extended the range and endurance of American military aviation, making the KC-135 a critical component of strategic airpower. Although based on the commercial Boeing 367-80/707 design family, the military tanker was extensively adapted for aerial refueling and military operations.
- The KC-135R represents one of the most significant modernization programs applied to the Stratotanker fleet. Older TF33-powered KC-135As were extensively upgraded with CFM International F108 turbofan engines, providing greater fuel efficiency, improved performance, lower noise, and increased reliability. The modernization also incorporated updated avionics and other improvements that allowed the aircraft to remain effective well into the modern era. KC-135Rs have supported fighter deployments, strategic bomber operations, airlift missions, exercises, and combat operations around the world.
- The Ohio Air National Guard has played an important role in maintaining the nation's aerial-refueling capability. Units based in Ohio have operated Stratotankers in support of both domestic and overseas missions, providing fuel to fighters, bombers, and other aircraft during training and real-world operations. Ohio Air National Guard KC-135s have supported major U.S. military activities ranging from Cold War readiness missions to operations in Southwest Asia and other regions. Their ability to remain airborne for extended periods while transferring fuel has made them an essential force multiplier for U.S. and allied aircraft.
- This 1:200 scale model of the USAF KC-135R Stratotanker in an Ohio Air National Guard configuration is an excellent representation of one of America's most enduring military aircraft. Its distinctive tanker design and Ohio Air National Guard markings make it an especially appealing addition to collections focused on the U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard, aerial refueling, or modern military aviation. A compact yet highly detailed display piece, it captures the legacy of the KC-135R and the important role played by Ohio's citizen-airmen in maintaining America's global airpower.
